John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men - 774 Words
Having lived at difficult times, John Steinbeck meets human nature and its flaws, which he successfully encompasses in his novel, Of Mice and Men. Throughout his career, Steinbeck has managed to craftily expose the entrails of humankind in an effort to reflect on its rather capricious psyche. In his novel, for instance, he portrays two wandering menââ¬âmentally impaired Lennie, and Georgeââ¬âwho seem to often get in trouble due to Lennieââ¬â¢s naivety. As the characters develop, it becomes clear that they establish the strongest of bonds, yet George numerous times proves humankindââ¬â¢s capricious psyche by demonstrating hate toward the unavoidable circumstances which mental disorders such as Lennieââ¬â¢s carry. In the final chapter, George hesitantly resorts to executing Lennie, thus conveying a universal message: one is not entirely depraved nor solely good, but a combination of both and therefore no act of killing is morally justifiable. Furthermore, George is not morally justified for having killed Lennie, since his feelings often shift between love, disgust, and selfishness. This may be seen when Lennie and he talk about the incident in weed, when Lennie and Curley have an incident, and when Lennie unintentionally breaks Curleyââ¬â¢s wifeââ¬â¢s neck. Although George certainly demonstrates affection for Lennie, he appears to be fairly selfish all throughout the course of the novel. When the characters first discuss the incident in Weed, George communicates his impatience, disgust, and selfishnessShow MoreRelatedJohn Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men1248 Words à |à 5 PagesIn Steinbeck s novel Of Mice and Men, He uses imagery many times to create a realistic setting and plot. Divisibility Argument Essay Example For Students
Divisibility Argument Essay DIVISIBILITY ARGUMENTThis paper will discuss the dualisms Divisibility Argument. This argument relies on Leibnizs Law and uses a different property to prove the distinctness of brain states of mental states. Mary, who is a materialist, presents several objections to that argument. Her main objection corresponds to the first/third-person approach. She believes that Dave presents that argument only from the first-person approach, which is introspection, and totally disregards the third-person approach, which is observation of another mind. Marys objections will follow by the Daves response on them from the dualists point of view. The purpose of the Divisibility Argument is to prove that mental states are different from the brain states. My body, which includes my brain, is divisible. However, I cannot conceive of my mind as divisible. Therefore, my mind is distinct from any part of my body. Descartes was the first who established the Divisibility Argument. He held that the two components which constitute man had an independent origin and are of a fundamentally different nature. The body is divisible, since it can be separated for example, my leg or my hand can be cut off; my brain can be cut on half. However, the idea of the divisible mind is inconceivable. This argument relies on the Leibnizs Law. It is a principle about identity, which says, if an object or event X is identical with an object or event Y, then X and Y have all of the same properties. So if X and Y have any different properties, then X can not be identical with Y. Divisibility Argument uses a different property to prove the distinctness of brain states and mental states: the property of being indivisible. In this case, the mind has a property and brain lacks it. The body can be divided, however, it cannot be done with the mind. Mary has several objections to this argument. First, she believes that the mind is an entity, which is composed of several mental states: thoughts, beliefs, memories, desires, etc. Mary strongly disagrees with Descartes claim that the mind employs itself in its different properties: willing, desiring, understanding, and so on. Secondly, she clarifies the meaning of the word conceive in the Daves argument. The term conceive might mean either imagine or understand. Imagining literally involves forming an image of or picturing in ones mind, whereas understanding is more conceptual and does not require the ability to picture something. In case, Dave interprets the word conceive as imagine in the second premise of the argument, this premise becomes untrue. The fact that he cannot imagine something to be the case does not make it true in everyones case. Different minds can imagine different things. However, if Dave implies understand as a meaning of conceive the second premise still remain s doubtful. The fact that Dave cannot understand it does not exclude the possibility that someone else is capable to think of his mind as having parts. The next major objection to the Divisibility Argument concerns first/third-person approach. Mary rejects Daves assumption that the true nature of the mind can be understood solely through introspection or from the first-person approach. She claims that things that cannot be conceived through the first-person approach, which is introspection, can be understood or investigated through the third-person approach, which is observation and science. Therefore, even if it is true that the mind cannot be conceived as divided from the first-person perspective, it is possible that it would be the opposite from the third-person perspective. The perfect example of that case is the multiple personality disorder. This is the clear case where the third-person perspective reveals the true nature of a mind as divided regardless of how it seems from the first-person perspective. .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4 , .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4 .postImageUrl , .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4 , .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4:hover , .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4:visited , .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4:active { border:0!important; } .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4:active , .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4 .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uf62f84ffaf89589df24949bfc01a29f4:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Rubin v Coors Brewing Co EssayAs a response to Marys objection, Dave agrees that the second premise in the argument does not have always a true value that makes the argument unsound. Therefore, he changes it to I cannot conceive of my individual mental states as having parts. In the case of the first/third-person approach, Dave relates to the multiple personality disorder as a case with several minds rather than one divided mind. In my opinion, Dave does not satisfactorily respond to the Marys objections since he does not give a good reasoning for his point of view. However, I do believe that the mind is indivisible since there is no such thing as part of mind. Mind and ma tter have fundamentally different natures: matter, which is extended, divisible, passive, and law-like; and mind, which is unextended, indivisible, active, and free. I definitely agree with Descartes that the soul occupies the whole body in all its parts, so the reduction of the body in any way does not reduce the soul. Thoughts, feelings, desires and so on, are all properties of the mind but not its parts. Category: Philosophy

Whos for the Game and Recruiting Essay Example
Whos for the Game and Recruiting Paper EA Mackintoshs Recruiting and Jessie Popes Whos for the Game? are both effective poems to look at when making a comparison between views of war in poetry, since there is definite contrast between the two. The primary difference is that Mackintoshs poem is very much anti-war whereas Popes poem takes a pro-war stance. As the poems are so fundamentally different in their approach to the topic it is not surprising that the rhyming schemes and language employed are also different. Jessie Popes Whos for the Game? presentation of war is quite different to that of Mackintosh, she is very pro war and does not regard it to be a life ending opportunity. With her poem she is actively trying to recruit young men, she attempts to do so by aiming her poem at the ordinary working classes, for this she uses everyday language. She writes in a conversational manner, which makes the poem more memorable and persuasive. She uses tactics in her poem to persuade men to join up; one of them is comparing the war to a game, implying that there is little danger on the battlefield. Within the poem, Pope uses many questions, which involve the reader more and together with the use of everyday language gives the poem a less formal feel. Her use of anaphora regarding the word who allows the message to be stored with the reader and has a slight brain washing effect to it. She persuades the men to join the army by making them feel deceitful and cowardly if they were to stay at home. She also has a friendly manner in her propaganda poem as she refers to the men as lads. She pressurises the men into joining the forces with her assumption that they will come on alright. Pope makes the country more appealing and dependable upon their support when she gives it a female gender. This capitalises on the sexist attitude of the era where men were expected to take care of and protect their women. Pope has written this poem in four quatrains with a regular rhythm and rhyme scheme. This makes the poem more memorable. The technique used seems to be similar to childrens poetry and as such trivialises her subject matter. This poem is a recruiting poem with the aim of encouraging men to volunteer to join the forces. It was written at the beginning of the First World War and therefore the true disastrous effects of the war had not been experienced. Those left behind, women, children and exempt men, were often unaware of the true horror of the war and instead were seduced by a romantic ideal, this is what appears to have happened to Pope. Other poets and many soldiers, who saw her as typical of the unfeeling civilian who was supporting the war from the relative safety of the home front, particularly detested Jessie Pope, EA Mackintosh was one of these people. EA Mackintoshs Recruiting is in total contrast to Jessie Popes Whos for the Game? It is a satirical view of the propaganda going on back home to an increasingly patriotic society. Fat civilians wishing they could go and fight the Hun, Cant you see them thanking God, That theyre over forty one? The simple almost jolly rhyme and rhythm help to strengthen the satirical view. Mackintoshs poem has a dark humour to it, unlike Popes poem, and it focuses on the many negative aspects of war and the consequences of staying at home. Girls with feathers, vulgar songs , women at home would hand out white feathers to the men at home, like Pope women wouldnt have much respect for healthy men not joining up for the war. Mackintosh, like Pope uses language which would be understood by everyone, he uses phrases the men would be used to Lads, youre wanted, go and help' and then compares it to the realistic image of the trenches with Lads, youre wanted! Over there. He follows the tradition of simple propaganda. He reveals how tragic an existence in the trenches is with More poor devils like yourselves waiting to be killed by you. His simple and regular poem conveys to the reader that war is not a game but a very horrific event. Mackintosh singles out journalists in his poem Help to make the columns stuff for the blasted journalists since they are making profits out of the misery of war. Pope however does not appear to think that the journalists are doing any harm since her poem has been written for a newspaper. Mackintosh has respect for all the men in the war come and learn to live and die with honest men but he does not insult the men not joining the war effort like Pope does making them sound lazy taking a seat in the stand. Pope makes the war sound like a huge source of entertainment, referring to it as fun, with the added bonus of fighting for your country. Mackintosh keeps to his anti war status throughout the poem and regards signing up for the war as helping to swell the names in the causality list. Mackintosh ends his poem on a rather sinister but truthful note come and die. Joining the war was not as Pope described and the sad truth was Mackintoshs description was probably accurate. Jessie Pope ends her poem on a positive note making the reader feel their country actually needs them and are calling for you. Both these poems are effective in studying the literature of the First World War as they both present such different pictures. Mackintoshs poem is an excellent example of poetry portraying the realism of war whereas Popes poem is an admirable model of the unfortunate attitude cultivated on the home front. The contrast between the two allows the reader to see the reality of the First World War from two different perspectives.

Christina Aguleria and Lil Kim essays
Christina Aguleria and Lil' Kim essays In Bad Sistas, Tricia Rose addresses raps written by women that specifically concern male-female relationships. She says, MC Lytes and Salt N Pepa have reputations for biting raps that criticize men who manipulate and abuse women. Their lyrics tell the story of men taking advantage of women, cheating on them, taking their money, and leaving them for other unsuspecting female victims (Rose 267). These songs address problems that females are continually facing. MC Lyte and Salt N Pepa are portraying these problems to forewarn women about the deceiving men out there. These songs most importantly try to resist the common double standard of society. MC Lyte is trying to resist the common standard of society by having men be addressed as tramps, rather than women. Roses analytical approach can most certainly be applied to a much more recent example. In 2003, Christina Aguilera released, Cant Hold Us Down, featuring Lil Kim. Aguilera and Lil Kim successfully resisted what they call the common double standard of society. Men are granted greater sexual freedom than women are. Augilera and Lil Kim voice their opinions in a powerful way and inform makes that this is politically incorrect. They address and attack the common double standard of how men can get away with their sexuality and have multiple partners, whereas women who do the same thing are looked down upon and are addressed as whores, sluts, or tramps. Christina states, The guy gets all the glory the more he can score While the girl can do the same and yet you call her a whore (Lyrics). This statement is true because you rarely hear about a male being called a whore for sleeping with many women. Its not fair that a female should be criticized about her sex life just because of he r gender. I think its very refreshing when women rappers address and attack the common ...
